“I was familiar with Leket, but I was not aware of the organization’s the farming initiative. I knew about the surplus food distribution, so when I came here specifically to do agricultural work, I didn’t immediately think of Leket,”
Graham Lewis from London
Since the outbreak of the Swords of Iron War, Israel has witnessed an extraordinary influx of visitors from around the globe, not just to tour but to volunteer where they are needed most. Amidst the turmoil, these dedicated individuals, more than 60,000 to date, have rolled up their sleeves and headed out into the fields with Leket Israel, helping farmers with their harvests and ensuring the continuation of agricultural activities in the country. Leket Israel proudly serves as a resource for these volunteers, offering meaningful opportunities to make a tangible difference.
Although Leket Israel is one of the largest food rescue and volunteer organizations in the country, many donors, like Graham Lewis from London, were unfamiliar with Leket’s initiative to send volunteers to work the land and assist the farmers.
Upon discovering Leket’s agricultural initiatives, Graham began volunteering regularly. “When I found out that Leket was coordinating these visits, I started participating every few days. There are many groups doing similar work,” he continued, “but Leket is extremely well run. The buses come to the same place every morning. ”
The significant need for farming volunteers, especially along the Gaza border, has not been widely publicized abroad. “I didn’t realize how much farmland is in this area, and how much help is needed,” Graham reflected. “The volunteers are wonderful. I’ve made friends, and we all come back to volunteer together. It’s terrific,” he shared.
During this difficult time, farmers are struggling more than ever to keep their businesses going. The fear of importing produce due to conflict-related disruptions and safety concerns has put immense pressure on local agriculture. The volunteers’ work is crucial not only for maintaining the farms but also for ensuring that fresh produce continues to reach those who rely on it.
Graham has returned to Israel several times since January to volunteer. His unwavering commitment highlights the profound impact of the experience that Leket Israel offers. Volunteers find a unique opportunity to make an immediate difference, fostering a sense of community and purpose that keeps them coming back.
Leket Israel is incredibly grateful for the support and dedication of our volunteers. Their efforts are vital to our mission of supporting the Israeli agricultural community and providing food security to those in need. Together, we are making a difference, even in challenging times.
Leket Israel is fantastic, and the farmers really appreciate our work!
