Dear Friends,
We are thrilled to share a monumental victory for Leket Israel! Yesterday, the Knesset passed a significant amendment to The Food Rescue Act (2018), an initiative led by Leket. This amendment is a major step forward for Israel in building a food-secure society.
The new law mandates that all government-owned companies, government offices, and local authorities donate their surplus food to charities, which will then distribute it to people in need. This includes organizations such as the IDF, Police, and Correctional Facilities.
This amendment is a win-win for Israel: the government will save billions of shekels in food, health, and environmental costs; organizations will be encouraged to operate more efficiently and reduce waste; and food resources will be better utilized, ultimately benefiting taxpayers.
This achievement is a groundbreaking moment for Leket Israel, with the potential for global impact. It is the first law of its kind in the world to address social, economic, and environmental concerns through food rescue! We extend our deepest gratitude to our partners, MKs Yinon Azulay (Shas) and Yasmin Friedman (Yesh Atid), whose leadership was instrumental in passing this law.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your steadfast support and trust in Leket Israel. Your commitment enables us to continue leading initiatives and driving positive change in food rescue. Together, we are working toward a future where quality, nutritious food reaches those who need it most.
